Summerhouse Overhaul

Here is a gorgeous summer house that needed a little tlc from us, whilst some other work was being done in the garden.
We sanded it all down and painted in the same colour that it was, having made all the necessary repairs to it. We changed the window handles, door handles, hinges and cabin hooks for a more contemporary feel.
The main change though was on the inside with the addition of the panelling. Once we had designed and installed it, we primed it, undercoated it and then painted the entire thing twice using Dulux Satinwood, tinted to the colour Timeless. The ceiling was painted white.
We added a replaced the guttering for a slightly grander one and added 2 water butts at the rear.

A very enjoyable job this one with the customers trusting us to be at their property while they were away.

Wheelchair Access from Patio Doors

Here is a customer whose health has started to deteriorate over the years and now finds herself need to use the wheelchair.
It was a family member that made contact with us having seen this one we did a while ago.
The remit was simple – Lift the blocks up and create gentle slopes in all directions.

Once all the blocks were removed, we raised the height of the land using a sub-base of granular MOT and added sharp sand on the top of that. Once the blocks took their new shape, we had to cut all the border blocks by the doors as the door sill was now in the way. These newly sized blocks were cemented in and an air gap was left under the sill for drainage.

They were all thrilled with the result as access to the garden is now so much easier.

We really enjoy this type of job because we can see the difference it makes to how people live their lives.

Front Of House Revamp

This was a lovely job from start to finish.
First job was to clear the old stuff out.
We then had to re-edge the area following the existing style of the driveway. We were then able to lay the foundation hardcore (MOT) and sharp sand to bring the area up ready for the block paving.  A frame was built and set in the middle before being filled with MOT and sharp sand.  Everywhere was getting the whacker plate on it to ensure a tight fit.
Almost 1500 block pavers were then installed followed by artificial grass.
We were aware that water didn’t really have a place to go as the downpipe against the house turned out to be just an outlet rather than going down into a proper drain.  Once we discovered that, we decided to install a small soak-away drain to try and take away the water from the surface of the blocks. 48 hours of constant rain later and we know the drain works so that is good news.
We then built a raised planter out of sleepers and incorporated a bench for the occasional sit down.  Topsoil filled the planter and the customer will plant it up.
Next to that, we built a bin store and installed a few trellis panels too.
On top of that a new gallows bracket was installed against the house to stop the roof above from sagging.
All in all, an extremely enjoyable and diverse landscaping job.

Shed Base and Build

Lovely little job this one.
Customer left the key and off she went. You really do need to trust your contractor so it is always nice when people put their trust in you.
The shed was already delivered onsite and as I knew the dimensions, I was able to design the base to the correct size before the day.
Once the soil was dug out and flattened off, we put in a small layer of MOT (hardcore) and a nice 50mm layer of sharp sand.
Then the 600mm x 600mm slabs were laid and edged off with edging bricks that the customer had and said I could use them if I wanted to. I definitely wanted to as it looks very nice being edged with them.
The shed was erected and as you can see in the photos, Stuart was there on this very cold day to give me a hand. So much easier with 2 of you when doing this sort of thing.
The final touch was to set out for a possible step that her Dad could do for her if she fancied it.
A very happy customer indeed!

Electrical Cupboard Build

Some electrical connection points can be really unsightly, so making some sort of cupboard to hide them, but give you good access to them when required, is a great way to tidy up that area.
On this project, we needed an electrician to deal with 2 issues. One was a random cable going straight up the middle of the wall and the other was the extending and relocation of the plug socket as it was in the way.
The wall had all items stripped out of the way that could be and the wall was then plastered.
The framework was built for the cupboard but there was an old gas pipe that had been capped off a long time ago coming out of the wall under the stairs. It was probably once connected to a gas meter but we all decided on this occasion to box over it rather than have a gas engineer out to inspect it.
I decided to give maximum access to the cupboard, we needed to use “Full Overlay” hinges. This means that they will cover the frame that they are attached to, when open. I also decided to include a bottom frame so that dust wouldn’t be going in the cupboard.
The walls, when dry, were ‘mist coated’ in white and then two further coats of Dulux Trade white.
The woodwork was primed first with a water-based quick dry primer and then given 2 coats of quick dry Dulux Satinwood.
This job only took 2 days from start to finish!
