Chimney Breast Modernisation

40 or 50 years ago, chimney breasts often looked like the one in this project. So this customer thought it was time for a change.
Have a look through the pictures but is was only the top section that they disliked in the end and asked me to come up with a solution for getting rid of it. In the end we decided to remove it down to what was a natural looking sill and on that sill we installed a solid oak piece of distressed timber to separate the old from the new.
The chimney breast was plastered and then papered with a warm looking pattern down to the new oak sill.
The whole room was painted and then a new carpet was installed (not be me) but the room was transformed 50 years in one go.
Lovely project.

Disabled Block Paving Ramp

It’s really great when you can make a difference to someone else and that is exactly what happened on this job.

Unfortunately here, the man of the house had had a stroke and needed a more gentle way of getting from the front door to the driveway. Whether he will be in a wheelchair or being guided by his devoted wife, this ramp makes a big difference to them both.

First job was to clear the land and take up the old driveway edging. The kerb stones that formed the edge of the step then came out and the step was extended out further for the wheelchair. New charcoal kerbs went in which were a different colour than the originals to form a more defined edge for the eye. The kerbs then started their descent at a gradual rate down to the driveway.

At the top and bottom of the slope, I cemented in some straight edge pale concrete edgers to hold the blocks on the slope exactly where they should be. I also laid the blocks on the slope in a different pattern, to again help their eye guide them up or down.

At the bottom of the slope, I bordered the driveway in the same way that the existing driveway had been and then filled in the remaining blocks.

The final thing to do was to sweep in the driveway sand to finish it all off.

Loved this job!

Small Bathroom Refit

Great job this one as it was quite a challenge in such a small space.
Everything came out, including the old plaster, but we did know that was going to happen as I had previously decorated a couple of bedrooms in the house and we had already discovered that the plaster was beginning to blow.
That said, all went very well and according to plan.
The toilet had to remain in service throughout the whole project as it was the only toilet in the house.
The customer chose this bathroom because she had seen the tiles and feature tiles on my website previously – here – and decided that it was the look she wanted.
I repaired the floor for the customer as it was a bit dodgy previously and then the flooring was put down by Mounters & Turner a few days after I had finished.

Laminate Flooring

The customer wanted rid of the carpet in the family room and the harsh black vinyl in the kitchen and utility. She wanted to tie the 3 rooms together with a laminate flooring for a seamless look and feel.
She took the carpet up before I arrived and I laid a fibreboard underlay throughout the 3 rooms and then protected the underlay overnight by putting the carpet over the top for walking on.
Once all the laminate was down we had to shave the kickboards and chose to make them sit better while we were at it as they weren’t previously supported correctly.
Finally a quadrant edging went down to finish the rooms off.

Concrete Path Base

A very satisfying job this one as the customer had contacted me telling me that he had already had the path done and that it did not match his specification.
So myself and Stuart broke out the old path, which was only 3 weeks old, and set up shutters to the customer’s exact specifications.
We had a mixer lorry deliver the concrete and the path was filled in 10 mins with another 45 minutes tickling it to get it perfect.
The reason it had to be so exact is that this path is the base for Victorian tiles that will be laid on it.
